JLL FAB operates with a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) supported by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), qualified in accordance with AWS D1.6/D1.6M — Structural Welding Code – Stainless Steel.

Our procedure establishes documented requirements for GTAW stainless steel welding and is supported by independent qualification testing performed by Maverick Welder & Materials Testing.

Quality Starts With a Defined Process

Consistent welding requires more than experienced hands. It requires a controlled process.

JLL FAB’s stainless steel Welding Procedure Specification defines the essential parameters used to perform the work, including base materials, filler metals, joint preparation, temperature requirements, shielding gas, electrical parameters, cleaning methods and welding technique.

The supporting Procedure Qualification Record provides documented evidence that the procedure was tested in accordance with AWS D1.6/D1.6M requirements.

Welding Procedure Specification — WPS

The WPS provides the instructions and qualified parameters used to produce the weld. For JLL FAB's qualified procedure, this includes manual GTAW/TIG welding of M8 stainless steels, groove and fillet weld applications, specified temperature controls, argon shielding and defined welding parameter ranges.

Procedure Qualification Record — PQR

The PQR records the actual procedure used to produce the qualification test weld and the results obtained when that weld was evaluated. JLL FAB's WPS is supported by PQR PQ26-044 Rev. 0, qualified in accordance with AWS D1.6/D1.6M.

Tested, Not Assumed

Qualification testing was performed by Maverick Welder & Materials Testing using a GTAW weld on 0.375-inch SA-240 Type 304/304L stainless steel with ER308L filler metal.

Visual Inspection

Acceptable per AWS D1.6 requirements.

Transverse Side Bend Testing

Four specimens tested. All four were acceptable.

Transverse Tensile Testing

84.8 ksi and 86.3 ksi ultimate tensile strength were recorded, with ductile weld failures.

These results provide documented validation of the procedure used as the basis for JLL FAB’s qualified stainless steel welding WPS.

Controlled From Preparation Through Completion

The qualified procedure doesn’t address only the welding arc.  It establishes requirements throughout the welding process.

Surfaces are required to be clean and free from contaminants that could be detrimental to weld integrity, with stainless steel brushing and grinding specified for preparation and interpass cleaning.

The WPS establishes minimum preheat and maximum interpass temperature requirements to help maintain controlled welding conditions.

High-purity argon is specified for shielding and backing gas within defined flow ranges.

The procedure establishes parameters for GTAW welding including amperage, voltage, travel speed, tungsten selection and welding technique.

Finished welds are required to be smooth and free from conditions including visible porosity, cracks, inclusions, incomplete fusion and unacceptable penetration or reinforcement.

FAQ's

The more technically accurate description is that JLL FAB operates with a Welding Procedure Specification supported by a Procedure Qualification Record qualified in accordance with AWS D1.6/D1.6M for the scope defined in the procedure.

The WPS covers manual GTAW, commonly known as TIG welding, for the stainless steel scope defined by the procedure.

 

Procedure qualification and mechanical testing were performed by Maverick Welder & Materials Testing in Texas.

 

The qualification included visual inspection, transverse side bend testing and transverse tensile testing. The documented test results met the applicable acceptance criteria.
